Security measures for all the Canary Islands
In addition to the alert levels applied for each island, which we will explain in the following section, there are a number of general measures:
- People over 6 years of age must use a mask in all public, open and closed spaces, except for food intake, physical activity and/or disability or respiratory pathology.
- Keep a physical distance of 1.5 meters.
- Disinfection and cleaning protocol in all establishments.
- Smoking is prohibited if a minimum distance of 2 meters is not guaranteed with the rest of the people on the public road.
- On beaches and swimming pools it is mandatory to wear a mask during walks or trips (this includes entry or exit). However, it is allowed to bathe and stay in a specific space (without moving) without a mask, but keeping the interpersonal distance of security.
Alert levels
Health restrictions in the Canary Islands are defined by 4 alert levels with their respective measures to address the COVID-19 health crisis. Make sure you know what stage your destination island is at the time of your trip, you will find information either on the social networks of the institutional bodies (the official Twitter account of the Government of the Canary Islands updates the information constantly) or on the digital newspapers of the islands, such as El día (Tenerife), La provincia (Gran Canaria), Diario de Avisos or Canarias 7. You will also find all the information on the Canary Islands Government website.
Here is a brief summary of what each alert level involves.
Alert level 1
- Stay of groups of people, both in public and private spaces: maximum 10 people, except cohabitants. If the group is made up of cohabitants and non-cohabitants, the maximum number of people established for each of the alert levels shall not be exceeded.
- There are no restrictions on entry and exit from territories.
- There is freedom of movement for people at night.
- Tourist accommodation establishments: maximum groups of 10 people.
Alert level 2
- Stay of groups of people, both in public and private spaces: maximum 6 people, except cohabitants.
- There are no restrictions on entry and exit from territories.
- Limitation of the freedom of movement of persons at night: between 23.00 and 06.00.
- Tourist accommodation establishments: maximum groups of 6 people.
Alert level 3
- Stay of groups of people, both in public and private spaces: maximum 4 people, except cohabitants.
- Restrictions on entry into and exit from territories: The exit and entry of people from the islands is restricted, without detriment to limitations in lower territorial areas depending on the epidemiological situation, except justified movements.
The following are excepted:
- Passengers in transit at a port or airport in the Canary Islands with a final destination to another country or other place in the national territory.
- People coming from outside the Canary Islands who accredit a reservation in tourist accommodation establishments registered and subject to the controls provided for in the law 17/2020 of 29th October.
- Limitation of the freedom of movement of persons at night: between 22.00 and 06.00.
Tourist accommodation establishments: maximum groups of 4 people.
Alert level 4
- Stay of groups of people, both in public and private spaces: maximum 2 people, except cohabitants.
- Restrictions on entry into and exit from territories: The exit and entry of people from the islands is restricted, without detriment to limitations in lower territorial areas depending on the epidemiological situation, except justified movements.
The following are excepted:
- Passengers in transit at a port or airport in the Canary Islands with a final destination to another country or other place in the national territory.
- People coming from outside the Canary Islands who accredit a reservation in tourist accommodation establishments registered and subject to the controls provided for in the law 17/2020 of 29th October.
- Limitation of the freedom of movement of persons at night: between 22.00 and 06.00.
- Tourist accommodation establishments: maximum groups of 2 people.
Formalities and requirements to travel to Tenerife
To enter the islands, those over 12 years old must meet one of the following requirements:
1. Present a negative COVID-19 Active Infection Diagnostic Test performed no later than 48 hours before arriving in the country. The evidence admitted is as follows:
- Rapid detection tests for SARS-CoV-2 antigens with a specificity of more than 97% and a sensitivity of more than 80%, according to the corresponding approval of a country of the European Union or of the European Economic Area.
- TMA
- PCR
- LAMP
2. Provide a vaccination certificate to ensure that the holder has received the required doses of COVID-19 vaccination. In addition, the last dose is required to have been received at least 14 days before arrival in Spain.
3. Submit a COVID-19 recovery certificate issued at least 11 days after the first positive NAAT test (PCR, TMA, LAMP). This certificate is valid for 180 days.
